Setting up SoftWish Licensing
SoftWish uses the same licensing software that Softimage uses: Flexlm. In order
to permanently license SoftWish, you'll need to make some changes to the machine
(hereafter referred to as the "License Server") which is dispensing the
Softimage license for the machine on which you will run SoftWish. In order to license
SoftWish so that it will run indefinitely, a program file (called a vendor daemon) must be
added to the flexlm installation on your License Server and changes must be made to your
License Server's Softimage Flexlm license file. Here's how to do this:
- Install SoftWish on your License Server choosing flexlm when you are presented
with the choice of installing SoftWish or flexlm. This will automatically
copy Video Collage's vendor daemon program into the SI_LOCATION/flexlm/bin
directory. This program is named VCOLLAGE for softimage 3.8 and lmvcllg for
earlier versions of Softimage.
- Send a copy of the license file, which is named SOFTIMAGE.lic (or license.dat for pre
3.8 versions), from the SI_LOCATION/flexlm/licenses directory on your License Server by fax
or email to Video Collage. For example, if your License Server has a license.dat file
which looks like this:

you would fax or email this file to Video Collage. Video Collage uses this information
to generate a modified version of license.dat by appending a SoftWish license to the
file's end. Such a modified license would look like this:

- When Video Collage emails or faxes the new license.dat back to you, use it to replace
the original license.file on the LICENSE_SERVER.
- Restart the flexlm server on the LICENSE_SERVER, so that the new augmented license file
will be read by the flexlm server. (The flexlm server reads the license.dat file only once
each time it's run, when it first starts up. Therefore, it won't "know" about
the changes in the license file unless you stop it and restart it.)
- On NT, follow these steps:
- Warn your colleagues who are currently using Softimage that the FLEXlm License Server is
about to shut down for a minute or two, and they should save any work. While the shut-down
should not affect current Softimage sessions on any client machines, it never hurts to be
cautious.
- Go to "Start | Settings | Control_Panel | Services".
- You'll now be in the "Services" dialog box.
- Select the Service called "FLEXlm License Server".
- Hit the "Stop" button.
- Answer "Yes" if NT asks "Are you sure you want to stop the FLEXlm License
Server service?"
- Wait until the service stops (probably a few seconds). The Status column will switch
from "Started" to blank.
- With the FLEXlm License Server service still selected, push the "Start"
button.
- Wait until the service starts (probably a few seconds). The Status column will switch
from blank to "Started".
- Push the "Close" button to leave the "Services" dialog box.
- On Irix, follow these steps:
- NOTE: If you are running a complex setup (for example, redundant servers), please
consult your documentation. That is beyond the scope of this manual.
- As super user type:
cd /etc/init.d
./siflexlm stop
siflexlm start
- Now SoftWish is licensed along with Softimage.
